Photographer Alison Scarpulla embraces material imperfections both sought out and created, adventures and misadventures in experimental film development, and – above all, perhaps – all manner of beauty in images. She shuns Photoshop, and yet she matches, if not bests her peers at their own game. Using any means and materials necessary, she cleverly achieves a desired effect – often strange and awesome – in each of her photographs. Take a close look at her works. The cut marks, splashes, drips, and smears that each bears are the result of sometimes using expired film, other times dipping negatives in acid or blowing smoke on them. Although her methods may seem unusual, the results they yield are quite remarkable.
